[Editorial] : Writing And Selling Ebooks

Hi - I hope you’re having a great writing week.

In this issue, we’ll talk about writing and selling ebooks.

Ebooks are very popular on the Web because people go online looking for information. If they can find what they want in a handy package and can get it instantly, they’re happy to pay for it.

Many writers write ebooks for others, so this week’s article is “Writing Ebooks - Working Out What To Charge”. I’m often asked what the “going rate” for an ebook is, so this article is my response to that very popular question. :-)

Here are some more answers to common ebook questions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ebooks

Q: How long is an ebook?

A: As long as it needs to be. Unfortunately, some ebooks are 100 pages of which 95 pages are sheer blather. Who cares what the history of hypnosis is, for example? Always consider the reader, who’s printing out the ebook so he can use the information. Give him only what he needs, and he’ll thank you. That said, format the ebook so that there’s space for the reader to make notes.

Q: How do I get ongoing gigs writing ebooks?

There are many ways. Here are several:

1. Go to Google and do a search for PLR (Private Label Rights). There are dozens of these sites online, and they’re always looking for decent writers. Get in touch and ask them what payments they’re offering.

2. Advertise your services on Craigslist.

3. Network. (By which I mean join sites like LinkedIn, Ryze, Facebook etc, and join some networks on those sites. Many businesses like giving away ebook freebies as a goodwill gesture to their customers, so writers are always in demand.

Q: Do I need a Web site to sell ebooks?

A: Yes… and no. Yes, you need a site because it makes selling your ebooks easier, and no because there are other ways to sell them. You can sell via Lulu.com and ClickBank, for example.

New Classes Coming Soon - Including A Class On Ebooks

I’m developing several new classes, and I’ve set up a poll on the writing blog.

If you’re interested in a class on ebooks or one of the other options, please vote. All the classes will consist of one-on-one instruction, with an option to join the class’s group on Facebook when you complete a class; this will help you to network.

Have a great week.

Affectionately

Angela

* Article: Writing Ebooks - Working Out What To Charge

(c) 2007 Angela Booth. All Rights Reserved.

You’re ready to go into business as a writer of ebooks. Perhaps you’ve read ebooks and thought “I can write that!” or perhaps you’re looking to extend the writing services you offer. Either way, you’ll find that many, many people want you to write ebooks for them. So the question you want answered is: how much do I charge?

Prices paid for ebooks vary greatly, as you might expect.  At the bottom end of the market, buyers want to pay $500 or less. Since you get what you pay for, these ebooks are… woeful.

Competent writers who lack business skills look at these prices and shriek in horror, but they shouldn’t be surprised. Because ebooks sell so well, many of the buyers are even less experienced than the ebook writers.

If you can write well, you can name your price as far as ebooks are concerned, because they sell well.
From my “writing ebooks” sales page:

>>>
Almost any ebook you write will easily sell 120 copies. Most will sell many more - around several thousand copies if you promote your ebooks.

So if you’ve sold 3,000 copies at $37, that’s $111,000. Over that time, you may have spent $10,000 or so in promotions, and you’ll have spent time promoting the ebook too. Nevertheless, you can see that there’s a lot of money to be made writing and selling your own ebook.

>>>

So how do you work out how much to charge for an ebook which will potentially make a nice sum for the person publishing it? Scroll down to read how I do it, but first, let’s talk about how you get paid the sums you want to be paid to write ebooks.

The Prices You Charge: Gotta Name? You Can Be A Price Maker

On my writing sites, I hammer the marketing aspect of a writing career, and I often think it’s a losing battle… inexperienced writers, and many professional writers just don’t understand the whole marketing thing. Unfortunately, until they understand marketing, they’re condemned to being price takers, rather than price makers.

A common tale of woe is: “I can’t get any ebook writing gigs that pay well!”

My response is always: “How much marketing did you do this week?”

And of course the response to that question is always the same - the writer did no marketing, no one knows his or her name, and it’s not surprising that the writer doesn’t have a block of work lined up.

Writers who market have LONG waiting lists, of at least three to six months. I know one ebook writer who lines up his projects a year in advance - and people happily wait for him.

If you don’t have a waiting list of people who want you to write ebooks for them, all it means is that you haven’t realized the value of promoting your name and your writing services. So do start marketing yourself: you’ll be amazed at the change it makes in your writing income.

Charge What You Need To Do A Great Job Writing The Ebook

Price your ebook writing services is simple: you charge what your time’s worth. I know writers who are experienced, who think that charging $1500 for a 100-page ebook is great money… that’s fine. Other writers who know the value of their services charge many times that amount.

Here’s the easy way to set your rates. It’s the way I do it, and it’s saves hassle. To set a price for your ebook writing, you need to know your hourly rate, whether it’s $50 or $150. Multiply that by the number of hours you estimate the ebook will take, and you have your writing fee.

Good luck with your ebooks. :-)
