[Editorial] Six-Figure Freelancers - They’re More Common Than You Think

Hi - I hope you’re having a great writing week.

The September issue of The Writer has a great story: “Secrets Of The Six-Figure Freelancers”. The story’s wonderful because it shows you the potential of a freelance writing career.

Yes, you can make a six-figure writing income
I chuckled when I read the story because many writers think a “six figure income” is hype. Either that, or they think that a great income is reserved for copywriters, or genre novelists, and so on. The fact is that YOU can develop a six-figure writing career: you just need to know that it’s possible to earn $250,000 a year  and more as a freelance writer, and then make that your goal.

Next week’s issue will have more info on developing a six-figure freelance writing career. This week, let’s think about getting saleable ideas.

Ideas equal money
This week’s article “Golden Nuggets - Finding Highly Saleable Ideas For Your Writing” discusses finding saleable ideas. I hope you find it useful: remember that ideas are everywhere. Collect them. You never know when a single idea will spark another idea for an article, a Web site, or a book. Good hunting. :-)

Speaking of ideas for Web sites, I’m pleased that many of you are taking the information in “Super-Fast Money-Making Web Sites For Writers: Join The Web-Publishing Bonanza” to heart.

As a writer, you’ve got all the skills you need to become a Web publisher and make a great income. For example, here’s a pic of Terry Zulit’s AdSense income for July 2007:

July-Adsense-Income

I don’t know how many sites Terry has, but this is nice income just from AdSense for the month. Of course, AdSense is just one way you can monetize your sites to provide a great passive income stream each and every day. For most Web publishers, AdSense is just pocket change; their real income comes from affiliate sales and advertising sales.

If you’d like to become a Web publisher, “Super-Fast Money-Making Web Sites For Writers: Join The Web-Publishing Bonanza” gives you all the info you need.

Affectionately,

Angela

Ideas equal money for any freelance writer, and if you want to make a great income, you’ll take idea collecting and idea generation seriously. Make collecting ideas part of every day.

Out of every thousand ideas you collect, you may only use ten or twenty. However, ideas have a wonderful way of kindling inspiration. Whenever I feel that I’m not in the mood to write, I spend 20 minutes reading ideas I’ve collected, and before I know it, I’m writing happily and enthusiastically.

Let’s look at sources you can mine for  ideas for your articles, Web sites, books, and blogs:

* Newspapers - what’s hot now; spotting trends
Newspapers are going the way of the dodo, but local newspapers are still a gold mine for writers.

Why LOCAL newspapers? Local newspapers are a great source of ideas because often you’ll be the only writer in your area, so any story leads which you develop will be yours alone. Local stories also give you sources for stories you can sell to national newspapers and magazines.

Read the online newspaper sites to see what’s hot and what people are talking about, and to spot trends. Clip and paste ideas into your idea repository.

* Magazines - who’s buying what? What’s missing?
Magazines are great markets for freelance writers. However, before you send a query or proposal to a magazine, so make sure that you’ve read at least one issue cover to cover. Not sure how to write a query? Read my “Special Report: Freelance Writing: Get Started Writing Articles For Magazines”.

If you’re targeting a particular magazines, look at the advertising. This will tell you what the magazine’s buyers are interested in, and it will give you story ideas.

Magazines are always great sources for ideas. For example, if you read a story in a business magazine about consumer marketing, this can spark a whole series of ideas: it may start you thinking about how that marketing affects the consumers. You may then get an idea for a women’s magazine about common marketing tricks. You may get another idea about how small businesses can use big business methods, and on and on.

* TV - keeping tabs on the culture
Yes, you can watch TV and call it research. :-) Watch the news, watch Oprah and other talk shows, and take notes. You should get at least a dozen story ideas from each show.

* Books - bestsellers you can write
Visit Amazon.com. See what the bestsellers are. This will show you what people find appealing. Visit book shops, with notepad in hand. Visit libraries. Come up with your own idea for a book which could become a bestseller.

* Blogs - you heard it here first
You can waste a lot of time reading blogs. However, blogs can also be a great source of ideas because they’re immediate. They’ll tell you what’s hot, right now.

* People - your family and friends
What are your family and friends discussing? What interests them? Why? Take notes: your family, friends and work colleagues are great spruces of ideas. (Tip: don’t take notes in front of them.)

* Places - your neighborhood and your travels
Walk around your town or city. What’s new? What are the house prices? Go to open houses and auctions, they’re great sources of ideas. What are people planting in their gardens? Take a digital camera with you everywhere you go.

I know several writers who pick their vacation spots by the number of ideas and stories they can sell about that location, but that’s possibly going a bit far. However, your vacation should provide you with dozens of story ideas.

Software to store your ideas - Windows and Mac
Ideas are useless if you can’t browse them easily, or find them quickly. I use Microsoft OneNote on the PC and EagleFiler on the Mac to store ideas and information.

As a writing teacher, I work with new writers every day. Many would love to leave their day job, but they don’t yet have the skills to write copy for corporate clients, or for national magazines. If this describes YOU, I’ve found a solution. I asked a new writer who’s making great money writing for the Web to share his secrets. He’s happy to do so. Read my new ebook.
