Make Money Blogging Today  Blogging For Dollars  How To Become A Career Blogger-1

Want a new freelance writing career? Become a freelance blogger.
I’ve been blogging since 2001, and for the past 12 months I’ve been swamped with offers of blogging gigs, and so have other freelancers who are highly visible on the Web. Blogging has huge returns on investment for businesses, so they’re hiring bloggers to update their blogs each day - often several times a day.

My new ebook, “Blogging For Dollars: How to become a career blogger — in your PJs, if you want”, teaches you how to blog for money.

[Editorial] Spinning Articles - Sell Them Over And Over Again

Hi Fellow Scribe

This week, let’s look at article writing. Both offline and online, articles can build a strong foundation for your freelance writing career.

I’ve noticed however that many writers fail to make the most of the articles they write, so that’s the theme of this week’s ezine - getting everything you can out of the articles you write. I hope you find the article “Articles Are The Foundation Of Your Career In Print And Online - Make Them Profitable For You” useful.

You should also maximize all the research that you put into articles: you can use your research again and again, by spinning articles - writing many times on the same topics, with different slants.

Spinning article topics: always think in terms of MANY articles, not just one
I was chatting with a freelancing colleague, and she made this point: “You’ve got to spin your article topics, so that you get all the value you can out of the research that you do.”

By “spinning” she means that once you research a topic, it gives you a foundation on which you can build: don’t think in terms of researching ONE article, think in terms of researching MANY articles.

Thinking in terms of “many” is a state of mind. For example, last year I did a lot of search engine marketing copywriting for some of my copywriting clients, and in the process, I researched how the search engines work, how to optimise Web pages for the search engines… and on, and on.

At the back of my mind was the thought: I can use all this research for articles. So I kept all my research notes, with a view to doing that. A month ago a client asked me to do an article series on the search engines, and I’m using all that information I gathered.

That’s one entire article series, of around 20,000 words, but I know that  that’s only the beginning… I know that I’ll use the information and research again and again  - the more you know about a topic, the more deeply and completely you can go into it. The time you spend becoming an expert is never wasted - it gives you lots to write about.

So never begrudge the time it takes to become an expert in a topic: think in terms of the MANY articles you can write with your knowledge.

Now, on a strictly housekeeping note, let’s chat about the new PDF formats for the ezine.

The PDFs - why PDFs?
I’ve had a many questions about the new PDF format: enquiring minds want to know. :-) So here’s the gist - I’m creating PDFs and uploading the issues to a server where you can download them.

Why? Simply because PDFs are easier for you to read and print, and because the text format runs into too many email gateway issues; ezine issues are just not being delivered.
So a short message with the ezine’s PDF download link seems to be the way to go - it makes the ezine easier to read, and helps ensure delivery too.

Affectionately,

Angela

* Article: Articles Are The Foundation Of Your Freelance Writing Career In Print And Online - Make Them Profitable For You

For many freelance writers “freelancing” means writing articles, and this applies whether they’re writing articles for newspapers or magazines, or are writing articles for the online environment.

So since you’re doing a lot of article writing, let’s look at making your article writing profitable. I know from working with my writing students that most of them have no idea how to get the most out of the articles they write - they’re losing money, and they don’t know it.

Making Your Print Articles Profitable - Which Rights Are You Selling?

When you’re writing for print - for newspapers and magazines - remember that essentially you’re not selling: you’re licensing. You’re licensing the rights to print your article ONCE. Therefore, read every article contract carefully: you should aim to sell only First North American Serial Rights (FNASR) to a US publication - never sell All Rights, or sign a Work Made For Hire (WMFH) contract.

If you’re not au fait with rights to your articles, this Rights 101 will help:

Unfortunately, many print publications are trying to grab All Rights. It’s just a grab, and it’s a sleazy tactic unless you’re being paid substantially more to hand over all rights to your work.

Ideally, you’ll sell first serial rights only in whichever country the newspaper or magazine is first published. This leaves you free to sell your articles again to newspapers and magazines in other areas of the world.

Many freelance writers have “golden oldies”, evergreen articles which they sell to publications around the globe. They make much more by selling the rights to additional publications than they make for selling the first serial rights.

So think in terms of first, second, third etc serial rights. Know what you’re selling to whom, and make your articles profitable by selling them again and again.

Now let’s look at online articles.

Making Your Online Articles Profitable - Creating And Selling Article Packages

If you’ve been paying attention to the online writing environment, you know that plain, simple articles can earn you a great income. Everyone wants articles, and if you can supply them, you’ve got a never-ending flock of clients eager to hire you.

Unlike print articles, when you’re writing Web articles for a client, usually you’re selling the articles under a “Work Made For Hire” agreement. The client hires you to write articles about gardening for example, and once your fee is paid in full, all rights in the articles devolves to the client.

This means that selling articles online (under a WMFH agreement) is a one-shot deal for you. You write, you get paid, the articles’ copyrights are no longer yours.

But what if you could create a package of ten, 20 or 40 articles, and could sell them again and again?

You can. Write a package of articles on a topic, and sell them from your  Web site as Private Label Rights (PLR) articles. You can sell as many packages as you wish.

I’ve written about PLR content before, here it is again:

>>>
Selling your own PLR content article packages is fast and profitable. The number of articles in a pack varies, from around ten to 20.  The articles are from 250 to 400 words: they’re SHORT. The topics can be anything at all that people are interested in online: credit cards, the latest diets, or pets.

You write your article packages and sell them online. Many writers charge around $20 per package, and sell a set number of copies, usually around 200 to 500 copies. So, when you sell 200 copies of a $20 package of ten 400-word articles (4000 words), the package earns you $4000. A dollar a word is a respectable rate for articles which won’t take long to write.

Ten short articles shouldn’t take you longer than an afternoon to create, so you can see how you can earn a lot of money with PLR content that you write and sell to many others.

>>>

Transition From Selling Your Time As Soon As Possible

Selling rights and selling PLR content means that you’re transitioning from selling your time, to licensing your writing. Your time is finite: if you’re always selling your time, your income from your freelance writing is limited.

There are many ways to make writing articles truly profitable for you; the more ways you can find, the more income you’ll make.

** The Unlimited Writing Market, The Web **

Writing For The Web-1

When you write for the Web, you’re never out of writing work. All Web sites need writers, and as the competition online grows, site owners hire writers to improve their sites.

The writing world in general hasn’t caught up with the Web. Now, YOU can — and you can cash in. Freelance writers just don’t realize how much money there is to be made by writing for the Web: many writers use the Web as a research tool, they don’t see the Web as a mass of millions of markets. They don’t realize that Web sites are STARVED for good writers.

As a writing teacher, I work with new writers every day. Many would love to leave their day job, but they don’t yet have the skills to write copy for corporate clients, or for national magazines. If this describes YOU, I’ve found a solution. I asked a new writer who’s making great money writing for the Web to share his secrets. He’s happy to do so.
